Learning To Talk Out Loud
I’ve been on a couple of podcasts recently. Allocate with Samir Kaji, How I Invest with David Weisburd, and The Rosen Report with Eric Rosen.
It’s a strange experience. You’re trying to sound like you’re having a normal conversation, with the heavy awareness that whatever you say is permanent.
A few things I’ve learned:
You can stop and redo a sentence as many times as you want. I have never been given this opportunity, to judge the worth of a sentence in live time, cut it like a director and try again.
Halfway through an answer, I’m conscious that I’m talking too much. I’m wondering about those who sound polished on podcasts, whether its a practiced skill or native storytelling ability, or both.
I’m on something that feels like a Zoom call, but there is a lurking “producer” sitting in the virtual mixing room. I’m now aware that my stories might work better in person.
Playing back the episode. I almost never actually do it.
All this said, I like doing these podcasts . It brings more awareness to what we’re doing at 3i, and forces me to refine the message of the network. Over time I’d like to get more comfortable sharing our story publicly. It takes some getting used to.
